Apprentice Wage Rise: What you need to know
Apprentices have received a monetary boost after new income rules have now come into effect across the UK. Those currently studying an apprenticeship have seen their pay go up significantly after Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s plans are now in place. Find out all you need to know about the rising apprentice wage…
So, what is the apprentice wage rising to?
The apprentice wage is rising to £4.81 an hour after being sat at £4.30 per hour for the past 12 months. It’s gone up by 51p per hour, an increase of almost 12% on the 2021 figure. Last year the rate for apprentices grew just 15p, so this year’s figure represents a huge boost.
How does it compare to everyone else?
The apprentice wage has had the highest increase, and by a considerable margin too. At 11.9% it sits top, with the next largest jump at 9.8% for 21-22 year olds. It almost doubles the National Minimum Wage rise, which has gone up by 6.6%. So it’s great for apprentices.
How much extra will you earn on the new apprentice wage?
Apprentices will now be earning 51p per hour more than over the past 12 months. For a 40-hour apprenticeship, that equates to a £20.40 increase per week, and adds up to over £80 extra a month. It will see apprentices earn roughly £1000 additionally for the annum.
When does the new apprentice wage come into effect?
Good news…it’s already in place! The new rates came into effect starting on 1st April 2022, so they’ve started. If you’re an apprentice, you will notice the rise on your wages in your next wage slip.
So with the new apprenticeship wage rising by almost 12%, it’s another reason to start an apprenticeship now! Remember that a lot of apprenticeships pay more than the minimum rate anyway.
