Apprenticeship Tips for May
Either you are undertaking an apprenticeship already or will soon be starting, entering a workplace for the first time can be a little nerve-wracking. That’s why we started ApprenTips, to help prepare apprentices and young people in the new world they are entering. Those following us on social media will have seen last month’s apprenticeship tips, but if you missed them, here is a round up for you!
Do your research
Our first apprenticeship tip in May was to do your research. Investing in an apprentice is a big commitment for businesses, especially if it’s a longer course taking 4 or 5 years to complete. If the business is investing in you, it makes sense for you to return the favour.
You need to make sure the company fits with what you are looking for. Doing your research before applying allows you to assess if it’s the right environment for you, working alongside the right people in a sector you are going to enjoy. After all, you don’t want to start a long-term apprenticeship and end up quitting after 3 months. Spend time finding the right apprenticeship for you.
Take up a new hobby
You’ve found the ideal apprenticeship, but how can you boost your application? We recommend taking up a new hobby. Maybe you’ve always wanted to join a running club but never have? Or you want to learn how to bake your favourite chocolate cake? Then go for it!
Hobbies and interests are great for you to talk about with an interviewer. Your interview is just people getting to know each other; the interviewer should take this opportunity to find out what makes you, you. Making the most of your hobbies is a great way to build a relationship with the interviewer.
Make use of resources
When applying for an apprenticeship or preparing for an interview, it’s important that you make use of the resources available. If you’re still in school, speak to the careers team about how to lay out your CV or ask teachers for some guidance on how to write a cover letter. We have created a previous guide of apprenticeship tips which is useful when preparing an application.
There are lots of resources out there, so make sure you’re using what is available to you. That way, your apprenticeship will stand out from the rest.
Ask about culture
As mentioned, an apprenticeship is a long-term investment for both you and the business. You need to make sure the environment will suit your learning and you will enjoy working with your colleagues. That’s why it’s a great idea to ask about culture in your interview. If you only ask one question in the interview, make sure it’s this one. ‘Can you tell me about the culture of your business?’.
It gives you an idea of what the team is like, how they work and if you think it will be a good fit. Enjoying your apprenticeship is key to learning and a negative culture can impact this immensely. But if you go into the workplace feeling happy and motivated, it will mean you’re much more engaged in the apprenticeship.
