Five steps to starting your career
2023 is here already, can you believe it? As it’s January, you might be thinking of joining a gym, trying to lose some weight or setting other New Year’s resolutions. But have you thought about starting your career? Now is your time!
While it can be helpful starting to exercise or cutting down on unnecessary spending in the short-term, starting your career journey will benefit you for life. Whether looking to start an apprenticeship, find a new job or take the next step in education, you need to start now. So, we have created a useful guide containing five steps to help with starting your career…
Update your CV
Is your CV up-to-date and ready to be sent to an employer? This can be one of the main reasons stopping you from starting your career. If your CV is out of date, spend time updating this so you can apply for apprenticeships or jobs instantly.

Start a new hobby
In an interview, an employer wants to get to know you and explore your personality. Use the positivity a new year brings to start something new. Whether you start jogging with a friend, attempt to cook a new recipe each week or learn to play the guitar, it will benefit you massively.
While it brings health benefits or increased happiness, you will gain skills and experiences too. This will help show an interviewer you have a strong personality and range of characteristics that can be a great fit for their business.

Network on social media
Whether looking for an apprenticeship, a new job or something else, networking on social media is beneficial for you. How many times have you heard people say ‘It’s not what you know, it’s who you know’ when starting your career? While qualifications are important, the statement is true.
How can you get to know people? Start networking on social media! Create a LinkedIn account if you don’t already have one, follow companies you would like to work for and connect with people in sectors you have an interest in. That way, you can broaden industry knowledge which is invaluable when it comes to starting a new apprenticeship or job.
Building relationships with people on social media can offer new opportunities too. From interacting with their posts, someone in your network may contact you about a vacancy they have, so it’s worth investing time into as it may open a door previously closed.
