Not going to University – what do I do now?

Today is one of the most important days for students across the UK – A-Level Results Day! While most young people will be going off to university, it’s not for everyone. But what are your options? Apprenticeships offer a fantastic route for those not going to university, so we have created a guide explaining why choosing an apprenticeship instead of university makes perfect sense…

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are available to anybody aged 16 or over and offer countless opportunities to those not going to university. It provides relevant training in practical settings, allowing young people to work alongside experts in their industries and learn from the best.

While a degree teaches the theory, an apprenticeship gives real-life opportunities to develop and build skills. Although commonly associates with skilled labour roles, apprenticeships are available in almost every industry – from business support or customer service, to mortgage advisor or HR.

Not going to university means no debt!

In three years time, most students who have been to university will have £50,000+ of debt. Studying a three-year apprenticeship over the same period would have seen someone earn at least £30,000. That’s a difference of £80,000. Wow!

That’s because apprenticeships offer an opportunity to earn whilst studying. Not going to university and choosing an apprenticeship seems like a great option now doesn’t it!

Start building your career early

Apprenticeships are a great opportunity to develop skills and knowledge needed for a successful career, as many are often transferable. You then apply them to real-life situations by working in your role, one of the major benefits of not going to university.

Equivalent to a degree

While university offers the chance to earn an undergraduate degree, choosing to study a degree apprenticeship gives you an equivalent certification. The difference is that you will have a few years of experience and have been earning if choosing the apprenticeship pathway.

There is a stigma that apprenticeships do not provide the same career opportunities that university does. That is not true. See how different levels of apprenticeships compare to the higher education pathway.

So you have decided that not going to university is the best option for you. After reading this guide, we hope you are ready to make an informed choice on what to do next. Want to apply for an apprenticeship? Take a look at our current apprenticeships and start your career now!
