My Toast

I could not be prouder, to be able to say that my Grandad; my living hero (pictured in the above photo) is still with us to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day on the weekend of May 8th; but there will not be any grand party nor even bunting displayed they are not a generation of use it once and throw it away mind-set ; he will celebrate is his own way, with a tot of whiskey in his own home with my Nana.

He loves to share stories of his time in India (a place he always wanted to return to; but once his dementia took hold, unfortunately, this was never to be), and whilst we will probably never know the truth; especially his story of how he saved a young Indian Prince from drowning in a river – it will be his legacy.

The war years for him, and thousands of others changed their life path forever; he was destined to follow in family footsteps and work in the West Riding within the textile industry, but at the age of 18 and upon enlistment he was exposed to new friends from different backgrounds and cultures, he took this opportunity to learn from them and he carved a new life when returning to the UK and studied to be a solicitor, which was his life’s work until his retirement.

In honour of my Grandad and the generation that gave so much to pave a path for democracy, I will be joining him from the safety of my own home, whilst he is secure in his – for the Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of WW2’ at 3pm on the 8th May and I hope that by upholding the strict restrictions placed on our freedom of today, I can get to hug this very dear human again very soon.
