Expected Behaviours and Good Practices for Apprentices

As you begin your search for the perfect apprenticeship, it’s important to know the expected behaviours and good practices that employers, recruiters, and training providers are looking for. In this blog post, we will highlight some of the key skills and behaviours that will help set you apart and increase your chances of landing your dream apprenticeship.

Research the Company/Industry

When applying for an apprenticeship, it’s crucial to do your research on the company and the industry you’re applying to. Start by researching the company’s mission statement, values, and history to get a better understanding of their work culture and what they stand for. Additionally, research the industry and any recent developments or trends. By doing so, you will not only be better equipped to answer interview questions but also show your genuine interest and commitment to the role.

Communication Skills

You will be working with colleagues, managers, and customers, and it’s important to be able to communicate effectively in all situations. When communicating with recruiters or employers, be sure to use a professional tone and avoid using slang or overly casual language. Additionally, listen carefully and respond thoughtfully to any questions or feedback you receive.

Punctuality and Professionalism

Punctuality and professionalism are crucial when applying for an apprenticeship. Arrive on time, dress appropriately, and always present yourself in a professional manner. Remember, you are representing yourself as a potential employee, so make sure you are giving off the right impression. This includes being responsive and proactive during the process and keeping those necessary up to date with your situation (It doesn’t paint a great picture for you if you go off the radar and become uncontactable!) Ensure you’re respectful and polite to everyone you interact with – manners cost nothing!

Honesty is the best policy

It’s highly likely that you’ll have applied for several opportunities or have numerous upcoming interviews. This isn’t a bad thing and will not negatively impact your impression – trust us, we don’t expect you to put all your eggs in one basket! All recruiters and employers ask is that you’re honest about your circumstances – If you’re awaiting a response from another opportunity, be upfront about it and all parties will respect it.

Positive Attitude and Eagerness to Learn

Two people having a friendly conversationOne of the biggest things that employers look for in an apprentice is their attitude and willingness to learn. No one expects you to know everything when you’re starting out, but they do expect you to show eagerness, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude towards learning. During your interview, highlight any relevant experience or skills, and demonstrate how you can apply them to the role. Additionally, be open to feedback and willing to take constructive criticism. This is extremely valuable information which will help you better yourself for future instances.

Follow Up

After each interview or interaction with a recruiter or employer, always follow up with a thank you email or note. This simple act shows that you appreciate their time and consideration, and will set you apart from other candidates who fail to follow up. Be sure to mention something specific from your conversation to show that you were engaged and interested.
