Stages of an Apprenticeship

When you embark on an apprenticeship there are various stages to the journey of completion that you will go through, a typical apprenticeship has 10 stages from the very start through to completion, some of these stages are more in-depth than others but each one is just as important.

Enrolment:

This is the first stage and important to get right, this is where you provide personal details about yourself, for instance, any qualifications you have already achieved, at this point it will be determined whether any further assessments will need to be undertaken, this will ensure that tailored support can be provided to you throughout the apprenticeship.

Induction:

Wheel with number two highlightedThe induction is where you get the chance to meet your new colleagues for the first time, this will be onsite at your place of employment. At this point, any equipment or resources required will be provided, and instructions on setting up any online platforms are given, this is where employers have the opportunity to set out the role in more detail, what the expectations are and the initial tasks that you will first be set.

Training:

You will be supported by your line manager and experienced colleagues to develop new knowledge and skills through reading, activity & project-based learning possibly some simulation/role play whilst your skills are established.  You will train on the job and you will also be provided with learning opportunities by your Training Provider.

Evidence collection:

You will be required to make notes on your learning, you may complete specific project work or you might be assessed by your line manager or training provider coach; this information needs to be gathered and saved in your personal apprenticeship file for reflection and skills development.

Reviews:

On a regular basis, you will be asked to reflect on your apprenticeship journey by your employer and your training provider,  this provides you with the option to understand what is going well and what support you may need with certain aspects of your apprenticeship. these reviews are part of a formal discussion and part of the apprenticeship process.

Assessments:

Throughout your apprenticeship you will be assessed for new learning and development, you could be assessed (monitored) by a work colleague, line manager or by your training provider coach.  The assessment can be documented and form part of your evidence.

Feedback:

Following assessments you will be given constructive feedback, this is your chance to understand what new learning you need to focus on for the coming weeks along with building your active listening and questioning skills.

Gateway:

You are usually assessed for Gateway suitability close to the end of your apprenticeship, your training provider will discuss this with you 3 months before completion.

Final assessment:

The culmination of all your apprenticeship learning will be discussed, your knowledge will be checked and your skills could be monitored.  Your line manager will be pivotal in sharing your progress and how you have met the apprenticeship standard.  Your assessment will be carried out by an independent assessor to make sure of quality verification.

Certification:

The final stage! that’s it you’ve done it, this is the bit where you receive your official copy of certification a record of your achievement and completion of your apprenticeship! Well done!
